What are OKRs and why use OKRs?
OKRs or Objectives and Key Results is a goal setting framework popularized by Google. There are many advocates for using OKRs especially in business, product management, marketing and so on.
The chief reason OKRs are popular is the framework is easy to use & increases your chances of success.
Describing OKRs
With OKRs a big ambitious goal is broken down into one which can be achieved within a 3 month timeframe.
Each Key Result is linked to an Objective – the Objective is ambitious, qualitative & descriptive. Objectives serve as a constant reminder for why we’re chasing this key result.
The framework calls for 3-5 key results for an Objective – if you monitor a single metric you risk making no progress or taking backwards steps on other metrics.
At the end of each quarter, review your OKRs & plan your OKRs for the coming quarter.

When you closely manage the initiatives that drive your key results you’re playing an entirely different game. You’re setting yourself up for success.
The average user has in excess of 30 initiatives for a given quarter. Several initiatives per KR in most cases. Some users have many more initiatives. A to-do list simply isn’t going to cut it at this level.

Create as many Objectives as you need.
You can group your objectives as well (not pictured here) by team (e.g. core, sales, finance etc), area of focus (e.g. revenue growth, customer satisfaction etc) or business function (e.g. sales, manufacturing, deliveries etc)
Strictly speaking Objectives should be measurable – with friyay.com you can create a qualitative Objective e.g. ‘Hire a sales team’ or ‘Launch in London’

Link Key Results to Objectives
Key Results are the indicators of success or progress towards your objective. If your key results are moving forward your Objective should be too. Again, these should be measurable – you can make a qualitiative Key Result if the situation calls for it.

Link Initiatives with Key Results
Initiatives are where the rubber meets the road. These are the streams of work, projects, programs that you work on day-to-day. Initiatives can run for weeks, months, quarters and longer. You can extend your initiative quarter after quarter as often as you require.
